“What the…?” Jasmine blinked, her blurry vision focusing on Asher’s handsome features. He kneeled beside her, his face hovering inches above hers, concern etching lines into his forehead. She inhaled deeply, and his warm, rugged scent reminded her of a campfire on a summer evening.

His gaze dipped briefly to her lips before he sat back on his heels and swallowed hard. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

“Um…” She rubbed her forehead before rising onto her elbows. When the room stopped spinning, she pushed to a sitting position and rested her feet on the floor. Her floor. She glanced around the room, confusion clouding her mind. The last thing she remembered was lying on the cold concrete in the back room of the pub, a pirate ghost sucking the life energy out of her.

“I portaled you here.” Asher sat on the sofa next to her. “Lafitte was attacking you, and I…”

“Thank you.” She searched his eyes, trying to believe what her heart told her was true. The key to unlocking his door and solving all his problems was within his grasp, but he’d chosen to save her rather than continue fighting the pirate. She didn’t know he was capable of such kindness. Maybe Asher was different after all.

“What happened in there? You said you could line up all the spirits and make them do the limbo, but it looked like Lafitte had you as low as you can go.”

She wanted to be offended, but the worry in his eyes defused her ego. “I said that when I thought we were dealing with a dozen normal ghosts, not some super spirit who can siphon the energy from others, and definitely not a thousand of them.”

“Most of the others are recently deceased, so they won’t be that strong.”

“It doesn’t matter if they died five minutes or five years ago, if they get too close, they suck the energy from me like a tourist sucking down a Pat O’Brien’s hurricane.” She clamped her mouth shut. Dammit, she didn’t mean to tell him that.

“Wait. All spirits can do that to you? Not just the strong ones?”

Resting her elbows on her knees, she held her head in her hands. “Why do you think necromancers reanimate corpses rather than dealing directly with ghosts?”

“I thought it was so other people could talk to the dead. And maybe to show off a little.”

She sat up straight. “You think reanimating the dead is to show off?”

“It is a pretty cool talent. What you did with Cameron is too.”

“Cool?” She rose to her feet, and the room tipped on its side. Pressing a hand to her head, she reached her other arm out, hoping to grip the wall or a shelf. Instead, her palm landed flat against Asher’s shoulder as he stood to steady her.

“Whoa there.” He gently gripped her elbows. “Maybe you should lie down and rest? How long does it take to recover from an attack like that?”

“I’m fine. A few hours’ sleep, and I’ll be like new.” She swatted him away.
